Have you ever felt anxious, nervous, weak, fragile, insecure, doubtful, self-conscious, indecisive, hesitant, uneasy, or timid? I’ve experienced every one of these feelings! Do you know what all of these words have in common? They are all antonyms—or opposites—of the word confidence.
God’s Word has a lot to say about His people living with confidence. Hebrews 11:1 even defines faith as “confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” If we are people of faith, then we are also people of confidence! Do we believe that God keeps His promises? Do we approach every moment trusting with confidence that He is in control?
Hebrews was written to Christians facing persecution. The author encouraged these new believers by reminding them who Jesus is. Understanding that He has power and authority over everything builds our confidence as His followers.
If you’re feeling any of the things I listed above, remember the message of Hebrews: Jesus is better than anyone or anything. He is worthy of our complete devotion and trust. And God is faithful. He will never abandon His people and calls us to remain faithful to Jesus even in our struggles.
In other words, we don’t have to understand every situation—we just have to choose to trust God. Hebrews 13 quotes God’s promise from Deuteronomy 31:6: “I will never leave you; I will never forsake you.” Because of this promise, we can confidently say Jesus is for us. God Himself is our helper. He is present in every circumstance. He is near. Therefore, we will not be afraid. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).
The Psalms inspire us to live with confidence in God. In Psalm 108, David sings, “My heart, O God, is steadfast; I will sing and make music with all my soul… I will praise you, Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies.” David’s heart was steadfast because he trusted God’s love and faithfulness.
His journey was not without challenges—and neither is mine. When I faced a troubling diagnosis, job loss, grief, or betrayal, each moment became an opportunity to exercise faith in Jesus. If you’re lacking confidence today, start with praise. In praise, we lift up Jesus, draw near to His presence, and find our faith strengthened. That faith transforms doubts and anxieties into something unshakable—confidence that points others to Him.
