Motherhood, although with its many ups and downs, is one of the greatest blessings God bestows on women. We were chosen to bring forth life. We carry and nurture this beautiful blessing in our womb, patiently waiting for the day our little treasure is born. We’ve sacrificed our bodies, our wants and sometimes even our needs to have the healthiest baby possible. We are then filled with such joy when they arrive.
An infant to a baby, a baby to a toddler, a toddler to preschool, then elementary, middle school, high school and for many college. We nurture, model and guide them step by step, then step aside as they spread their wings. We make sure baths are taken, dinner is prepared, homework is checked, stories are read, booboo’s are kissed, picking up, dropping off, waiting, doctor appointments. We are nurses, counselors, teachers and preachers. No wonder there are times we feel as if we want to run away, take a break and sometimes even go on strike.
Some days we feel as if we are not doing enough. Some days we feel like we’re doing too much. Some days we overflow with love to give and some days there’s nothing left. We compare ourselves to other moms; you know the ones who do everything right, whose kids are in bed by 7 pm, play 22 instruments, eat a healthy well balanced meal which includes kale chips every night, and bake gourmet deserts; while we are lucky to get everyone fed and in bed by 10 pm (and that’s on a good night)!
We experience tantrums, eye rolling, bickering and arguing, and that famous line every mom knows, “my friend’s mom lets her!”. And that’s not even the half of it. Needless to say, being a mom is challenging, but it’s also our first and most important ministry.
We have been given the gift of motherhood that some will never receive. Psalm 127:3 tells us that children are a gift from God. And our role as Mothers, more than anything else, is to teach our children scripture and a biblical world view, with a relationship based fear of the Lord, and to model integrity
“You shall teach them (diligently) to your children (impressing Gods precepts on their minds and penetrating their hearts with His truths), speaking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road and when you lie down and when you rise up.” Deuteronomy 6:7.
“The reverent fear of the Lord (worshiping, obeying, service and trusting Him with awe filled respect) prolongs one’s life.” Proverbs 10:27.
“He who walks with integrity and with moral character walks securely.” Proverbs 10:9.
Being a Mother is so much more important than everyday tasks that we sometimes get so bogged down with. If we lead with a Kingdom perspective, we would find that our first and most important ministry is to bring our children up in the way of the Lord. Modeling a Christ like attitude, honoring and surrendering our will to do things our way, to God’s way. When we fall, we show our children how we repent and quickly get back in fellowship with the Father, and model for them what it means… “to love the Lord with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our strength, and with all our mind”. Luke 10:27.
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6
