Why is it so difficult to trust God?
We believe in God. We have faith in Him.
But do we trust Him?
We’ll look at another woman whose story will encourage us to trust. Once again, I asked the same set of questions to all of them: What is your definition of trust? Was there ever a moment where the only thing you could do in a situation was trust God? What makes you know you can trust someone?
I’ve heard it said, “the eyes are the windows to the soul” this may be true, but I have also discovered that “the words of someone’s story are the passageway to their heart.” All spirit-filled stories are testimonies to their faith and trust in God.
Proverbs 3:5-6: (NIV) says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
This is the first verse of scripture I turn to when I think about trust. Being the wisest man in the Bible, Solomon wrote Proverbs to his son or sons, but his inspired words apply to all of us. In Proverbs 3:5-6, Solomon encourages us to trust in the Lord, and he says if we do that, God will make our paths straight, or direct our paths.
There have been many women I have grown to love as sisters in Christ through studying the Bible together. But there are a particular group of ladies that stand out, and no matter if the season of study ends, there will always be that joy of having them in my life. One such woman is a beautifully creative and artistic friend. I have always admired her ability to accessorize her wardrobe, so I wasn’t surprised when I found out she makes costume jewelry. 
When I asked her what she thought the meaning of trust was, she said, “Trust is the ability to count on someone under every circumstance. It is the action of belief. I know I can trust someone based on a repeated pattern of them being there and protecting personal issues. Discernment from the Holy Spirit and knowledge of a person’s character is also essential.”
“There was a season in my life,” she said, “when the only thing I could do was trust in God. I was at an exceptionally low point mentally and emotionally. I wanted to give up. I didn’t want to live anymore. But then my God embraced me with His love, presence, and protection, which truly overwhelmed me. He gave me the hope to press on and live life abundantly.”
The enemy wants to use our weaknesses and sometimes the low points in our lives to steal our joy and make us think less of ourselves than who God knows we are. He wants nothing more than to destroy us emotionally and spiritually.
Because my dear friend had a relationship with the Almighty God, she was able to recognize His love for her. She was able to allow His presence to fill her. She was able to ask for His protection over her life.
“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I have come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly.”
John 10:10 (KJV)
This woman put her belief in God into action and trusted Him. She believed in the promise of God through the words of scripture in the book of John—that Jesus came to this world to give us life and that we would have it more abundantly!
How about you? Are you at a place where it seems there is no hope? Why not put your trust in the One who can be trusted? Lean not unto your own understanding and trust.
