In Genesis 26: 19-22, Isaac and his people have moved to the Valley of Gerar after Abimelech kicked them out. The herdsmen of Gerar are frustrated that Isaac is there trying to dig a well for his people. There is quarreling and frustration over the well-digging. Isaac actually dug two wells that the herdsman of Gerar quarreled over before he dug Rehobeth, which means “room.”
It’s interesting to me that the herdsman of Gerar didn’t take the time to understand that Isaac and Isaac’s people were blessed by God and lived under the covering and covenant of Abraham. They carried blessing and abundance with them. In fact, Abimelech kicked Isaac out because he believed Isaac had so much abundance that he was too big for their land! Instead of trying to get to know Isaac and his story, the herdsmen of Gerar were just upset that there were more people in their land. They were upset that something was “interrupting” their plan. How many times can we remember when we’ve been frustrated by an “interruption” in our plans?
Today, as you inevitably deal with interruptions from people, places and things; remember that interruption might just hold a promise and opportunity from God himself! That interruption has been placed in front of you with sovereign authority. So, even if it’s challenging, God can use it if we make room for his will. Don’t be a “quarreler” today, be a “well-digger” and keep digging until you find Rehobeth (room) for God’s blessing in life’s inevitable interruptions. You just might find living water for your dry and thirsty heart.
